The Academy’s professional staff support policy development, including submissions to government inquiries and consultations, communications and media engagement, runs STEM education programs and grants, organises events and briefings.

Senior leadership team
Kylie is the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. She works with Australia’s leaders in applied science, technology and engineering to advise decision-makers, lead crucial national conversations to solve complex challenges, and support Australia’s technology-powered, human-driven future.
Kylie is Chair of Aged Care Research and Industry Innovation Australia (ARIIA), driving evidence-based quality care for older Australians, is a Professorial Fellow at Flinders University, and – as a national award-winning science communicator – is a visiting Fellow at the Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science. In 2026, she was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia for her significant service to science communication and advocacy. In 2025, she received an honorary doctorate from Charles Sturt University for her services to science and technology, and commitment to truth and evidence in public communication.
Her international leadership includes chairing the Australian National Commission for UNESCO. Kylie’s work to champion the people, structures and investments necessary to a thriving STEM-powered economy was recognised with a place on the AFR’s 100 Women of Influence list in 2019.

Richard is the Director of Business Operations for ATSE, where he leads the essential corporate services that underpin the Academy’s mission. He oversees a diverse portfolio including financial strategy, risk management, information technology, and the professionalisation of operational frameworks to ensure long-term sustainability and excellence.
With over 25 years of experience in consulting and financial services, Richard has a proven track record of leading complex business transformations. Prior to joining ATSE, he held senior leadership roles at KPMG and E&P Financial Group, where he specialised in risk advisory, strategic growth, and navigating significant regulatory changes, such as those following the Financial Services Royal Commission.
A dedicated advocate for innovation and accessible education, Richard is also a professional mentor at the Australian National University. He holds a Master of Business and Environmental Management alongside undergraduate degrees in Commerce and Science. Based in Canberra, Richard is an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys mountain biking, tennis, gardening, and supporting his community.
